Wellness in the workplace . . . take it personal

Uncategorized

It was remarkable to see the following headline on one of Australian Channel 9 TV morning shows recently: “Overweight workers are a growing concern for employers”

Firstly, some disclaimers with regards to this post. I am not having a go at Channel 9, rather I think they did a good job highlighting some current events relating to this subject. Neither am I a health professional, so don’t expect much from that viewpoint. I am just reminding myself and expressing my views to my professional colleagues on the need to primarily personalise our wellness at work. Hopefully it will also trigger further conversations.

It’s not just body weight issues, though that’s vital. It’s about our overall wellness – spirit, soul and body. We ought not to allow the situation become mere employers’ concern. Yes there’s duty of care on their part. However, some (if not most), are driven by risks to bottom line, fitness for work (continuity), cost of litigation, etc. But people at work should take this personal first.

I had a health scare myself recently. Some of the investigations were invasive and many long waits for results (you know what it feels like). The final result was good, thank God! My heart goes out to people (and their families) who have had to have prolonged cases, some eventually fatal. I still reflect on going through all those periods of X-rays, scans, surgical procedures, waiting on results that could be life-changing. My work and employer were not the key things on my mind at that time. It was family, relationships, unfulfilled deep-rooted goals filled my mind. I have since tried to pursue wellness with renewed vigour. Hopefully, no employer and/or client would have to worry about my state of health except for the usual workplace formalities, employees incentives, and legal frameworks. My wellness matters much more to me, my family, my friends, and my vision.

It’s noteworthy that some health-related stuffs just happen – well outside our control. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go to colleagues going through such experiences. But so much falls within domain. Let’s do what we can and should do. Let’s take it personal. As we transit into a new year, take some definite steps to setting and achieving some goals relating to your overall wellness. Best wishes.
